Midway Island

Midway Island Dredging ProjectIT Corporation, in co-operation with the US Navy hired TMT to assist in salvage operations of a beached vessel at Midway Island. The vessel was lying close to shore and had become filled with sand contaminated by the ship’s cargo and fuel system. The Navy was interested in working with a commercial contractor employing new and innovative technology. TMT was selected and provided a custom design for the Tornado 3 dredge, employing a 4 inch Eddy Pump, manually operated underwater by Navy divers. Using a 25-foot suction hose, the 4-inch Eddy Pump successfully removed the contaminated sand and pumped it to an on-shore storage facility for treatment and disposal.

Conclusions:

  • TMT has the experience and capability to provide cost effective custom solutions to material handling and transport problems.
  • TMT’s modular equipment design makes transport a straightforward operation. The Tornado 3 was shipped from San Diego to Midway Island with no problems.
  • Materials were removed with little turbidity and divers were able to hold and operate the equipment underwater with good visibility.
  • The use of a 25-foot suction hose connected to the intake of the 4-inch Eddy Pump demonstrated the capacity to operate the Eddy Pump with no cavitation, despite severe pump suction (NPSH) conditions.
  • Sand and other trash items were pumped with little down time and high capacity.
